Hosok Tere... ... Hero's SquareAs the rest of the world prepares for the coming of the millenium, Hungary has already had a millenium celebration. The Hosok Tere contains the millenary monument which was erected in 1896 in celebration of the country's thousand year existence. The monument pays tribute to the founders of the Hungarian nation state, who were called the Magyars. |

The Magyars were barbaric, Siberian tribes who crossed the Carpathian mountains in 896 AD, looking to settle a new home in the west. They arrived in Hungary by 907, conquering Slav and German tribes along the way.
The journey was long and tiresome. Crossing the plains of Pest, the Magyar leader, Prince Arpad, saw the river Danube at the foot of the hills of Buda in the distance. In what is believed to be the very spot where this monument stands, the Magyar king ordered the caravan to a halt. He would have his castle built on the hills of Buda. This place was finally home. |
